New era, same commitment to community health

Note: Following the retirement of Jack Bartell, Dan Wakeman became President and CEO of
St. Luke''s in February.

Following a legendary hospital President and CEO like Jack Bartell is a great challenge. He led St. Luke’s Hospital with integrity, wisdom, business savvy and kindness. His contribution to improving the quality of care and quality of life in the Maumee area can’t be measured.

Jack instilled the importance of focusing on “Patients First. Always.” It’s no coincidence that St. Luke’s has earned recognition from HealthGrades for open heart and orthopedic surgery.

As an independent hospital, something rare in this region, St. Luke’s is committed to improving the health of the community. The new Diabetes Care Center exemplifies that commitment. Understanding that individuals with diabetes can enjoy active and productive lives with support from highly trained professionals, St. Luke’s set out to provide the resources to make it happen. Through very generous donations to the St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation from community, medical staff and employees, the Diabetes Care Center has become a reality.

We continue to provide comprehensive programs to help area residents regain and maintain healthy life styles. We understand that a healthy community is more productive and a better place to live and work. A strong community and a strong independent hospital go hand-in-hand.

Jack told me that the tradition of outstanding patient care and focus on improving community health dates back to St. Luke’s roots as Robinwood Hospital in Toledo. For the past 33 years, he nurtured those principles and grew them. I will do my best to uphold that tradition.

Dan Wakeman
