TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bureau of Labor Statistics has identified that a combination of a growing and aging population and retirements in the healthcare field will create over 4 million new jobs in healthcare by 2022.
To help prepare for that day, St. Luke’s Hospital will be hosting three hands-on events in March, April, and May that will expose a local youth character and career building group, Explorers, to jobs in healthcare.
“St. Luke’s is excited about hosting the Explorers,” said CEO and President of St. Luke’s, Dan Wakeman. “Having real-world, hands-on insight helps young people witness their potential and enhance the future workforce of health care.”
Exploring is a national co-ed youth group that originated from and is an affiliate of the Boy Scouts. Exploring exists to teach important life and career skills to young people ages 10-20 from all backgrounds through immersive professional experiences and mentorship provided by community and business leaders.
There are nearly 5,000 active Exploring Posts nationwide and health care is amongst the 12 career clusters the Exploring participants get to experience with professionals.
The first event is Tuesday, March 21, focusing on emergency and surgical services. The second part of the series is Tuesday, April 18, focusing on nursing and physician careers. The last gathering is Tuesday, May 16, focusing on neurological services and ending with a wrap-up celebration.
All events are scheduled from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and will meet in the St. Luke’s Hospital Auditorium before being dispersed to a specific work area.
This series is just one of many initiatives St. Luke’s organizes to give back to the community, including resources to help the community with hospital transportation, health and wellness education.
St. Luke’s is a Toledo-area institution located in Maumee, Ohio and was established in 1906. St. Luke’s most cherished resource is its dedicated and diverse medical staff that strives to provide health plus care for each patient in a comforting, personal atmosphere.
